Marktlink UK supports the sale of specialist rail staffing and training provider Akona to NRL Group
Marktlink UK has acted as lead adviser to Akona and Akona Concepts Ltd on their sale to NRL Group, securing a strong strategic outcome for the shareholders and the future of the business.
Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Runcorn, Cheshire, Akona provides staffing and training services to the rail industry. The business supports blue-chip clients through the provision of highly qualified engineering personnel, with a particular focus on overhead line electrification services. It also delivers well-regarded training and qualification programmes in related disciplines.
Akona’s shareholders were looking for a buyer that understood the specialist rail services market and would continue to invest in the business while building on its strong reputation.
Marktlink UK worked closely with the sellers to identify and approach a range of potential acquirers across the UK. Drawing on its experience in the staffing and infrastructure sectors, the team supported the shareholders in evaluating their options and advised on valuation and deal structure throughout the process.
NRL Group was identified as the most suitable buyer. Through its established NRL Rail division, the group offers complementary capabilities in maintenance, safety-critical services and asset inspection across the UK rail network. This strategic fit made NRL Group a natural partner for Akona’s next stage of growth.
“It’s great to have found a committed buyer to secure the long term future of Akona, a quality British business. With increased investment in public infrastructure, we are seeing service providers in this space attract significant interest."- Jonny Parkinson, Partner, Marktlink Manchester
Jonny Parkinson added:
"We were pleased to identify NRL Group as the ideal acquirer to take Akona forward, providing a great outcome for the sellers and a positive outlook for the business under its new ownership.”
I’d also like to recognise the contribution of our colleague Rachael Withnell to this deal, who passed away in August. Her skills and tenacity were vital in achieving the positive outcome for Akona and its team.”
“The advice and experience of the Marktlink team in helping us assess our options were invaluable, as was their support throughout this process."- Steve and Gaynor Ashley, Directors of Akona
The directors commented:
"We’re delighted to have found a buyer that shares our values and puts people and safety at the heart of its business. The NRL Group understands the rail sector and has built a respected operation within the industry, providing a safe pair of hands to protect and develop Akona’s trusted services.”
